Leave cling film in the past

Leave cling film in the past

If you’re wanting to cut down on your single use plastic but don’t know where to start, you simply need to head to the kitchen! So many handy kitchen essentials of the past are now slowly being phased out in preference of reusable, eco-friendly alternatives. Items such as cling film, tin foil, kitchen roll and plastic bags are being banished, with

other affordable, more eco-friendly options becoming available on the market.

Invented in 1933 by accident, cling film has been a kitchen favourite for over 80 years, its chemical properties provide protection and preservation for food whilst being easy to apply.

Fast forward to now and there have been several alternative and more environmentally friendly materials discovered which have in turn been made into products that can do exactly the same jobs as cling film!

We all know by now that single use plastics are extremely bad for the environment; they are very slow to break down (up to 1000 years!) and can only be used once. On top of this, cling film is also harmful to wildlife, as animals may get caught in debris or swallow it.

One such alternative material is silicone. Silicone has a much longer use life than cling film, and can be used for a multitude of jobs. This makes it perfect for the kitchen as it can be used in the microwave, fridge, freezer, oven and dishwasher!

Our personal favourite cling film alternative - and by far the most versatile option on the market at the moment - are silicone lids. Super stretchy and food safe, silicone food covers can be used to cover up left overs, store food or cover your lunch on the go! They are usually sold in a pack of different sizes, coupled with their stretchiness they should cover almost any bowl or dish in your  cupboard. The lids create an air tight seal, so you know that your food will stay fresh and they’re dishwasher safe so you can use them over and over again. Plus if you have any Tupperware boxes with lost lids, these make the perfect replacement!

Another favourite on the market at the minute is beeswax covers. Usually made from a combination of beeswax, cotton, natural oil and resin, beeswax covers are self-sealing to keep food fresh and are suitable for use in the fridge or freezers. These covers are completely natural and are usually reusable for up to a year, you can purchase them from a variety of online outlets.

Other options include silicone storage bags or reusable sandwich bags, however these are made for specific uses and are less versatile than the other options. They are perfect for food storage, or transporting your lunch.

With everything else that is going on at the moment it would be very easy to put environmental concerns to the back of our minds, but why not have a look at some of these eco-friendly, cling film alternatives, make a quick switch and start your eco journey.
